To ease your understanding and my analysis of games I'll use following terms to describe list builds and combat tactics used.
LISTS:
Elite: 4 or 2 ship list, majority of Pilot skill is 7 or above, upgrade heavy.
Specialist: 5 to 3 ship list where at least one ship is heavily upgraded and has very high Pilot Skill, while bulk of the ship is standard issue low-pilot skill.
Swarm: 9 to 5 ship list with low pilot skill and bigger numbers to compensate lack of upgrades and first-shot initiative.
GAME SEQUENCE:
Marking phase: preparation for combat, list build, ship upgrades, asteroid placement.
Growling phase: initial moves and manoeuvres in order to get into most advantageous position before first combat or Jousting.
Jousting phase: first head-on combat, which determines first victims and gives significant advantage to it's winner.
Furball phase: follow-up of Jousting, Furball is a mish-mash of turning fights and broken flight formations. Winner of this phase determines the end game or Chasing phase.
Chasing phase: last turns of the game, where superior numbers or survivors are trying to mop-up the remnants of opponent's squadron or desperate last-man stand to change the odds in their favour.
